DPH: Third Case of Measles Confirmed in Connecticut
The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) last week announced that it has confirmed a case of measles in a Hartford County adult, the third confirmed case this year in the state. The infected individual did not have contact with the 2 cases reported in April from New Haven County, and acquired their infection out of state. DPH is collaborating with local partners to identify contacts and implement appropriate control measures.

New Post Secondary Occupational School Opens Downtown Stamford

On Monday, April 30th over fifty people gathered to celebrate the opening of a new post-secondary occupational school in downtown Stamford. The Northeast Medical Institute is located at 29 Bank Street in the heart of Columbus Park with easy parking all around. Community leaders from the City of Stamford, Building One Community, the Family Centers, the Stamford YMCA, Stamford Hospital, DOMUS, Stamford Academy and the J.M. Wright Tech School gathered to learn more about the certification programs being offered that are geared to help jump start healthcare careers for individuals in transition and those seeking new career opportunities. The school can serve up to 60 students per month during the day and evening courses. They expect to graduate 200 students per year as certified nurse’s aides and phlebotomists.

National Infant Immunization Week is April 21-28
Visit the Norwalk Health Department during National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) this week to get valuable information about childhood vaccines. Rotary Club of Bridgeport helps Doctors Prescribe Reading to Young Children
Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit organization that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together, today announced their receipt of a $2,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Bridgeport. With the help of this donation, Reach Out and Read’s programs in Bridgeport will continue to provide new, developmentally-appropriate books and early literacy guidance during regular pediatric checkups to the over 2,300 children and families served by Reach Out and Read in the City through seven clinical locations.

April is National Donate Life Month

Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) is honoring the extraordinary people who have saved and enhanced lives through organ and tissue donation. Danbury Hospital, New Milford Hospital, and Norwalk Hospital — collectively WCHN — facilitate the donation process in order to fulfill a donor’s wish to give the gift of life. In 2017, WCHN, through coordinated efforts with New England Donor Services (NEDS), helped to save 23 lives and enhance up to 3,600 more through organ and tissue donation.
