DPH Asks Health Providers to Watch for Suspected Cases of Zika Virus
State health officials today said they have asked Connecticut health care providers to report suspected cases of Zika virus infection to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) and to the patient’s local health department. There are currently no reported cases of this mosquito-borne disease in Connecticut.

Jamie Masciarelli, Wife, Mother, and Stamford Resident Enjoys a Full and Active Life Following Weight Loss Surgery at Norwalk Hospital
Three years ago, forty-six-year old Jamie Masciarelli, a long-time resident of Stamford and an Asia Immigration Specialist at GE Global Operations, had gastric bypass surgery at Norwalk Hospital's Surgical Weight Loss Center. One year later, she lost 125 pounds and has maintained her weight at 118 pounds since 2013. “I’m living a full life focused on my career and family while having more fun than I ever could have imagined,” said Masciarelli. “I’m actively involved with ballroom dancing and participating in dance recitals and competitions.”

Fairfield County Residents Walk and Run for Heart
More than 600 Fairfield County residents walked and ran for their hearts, and to help raise awareness and funds for the number one killer—heart disease--at the Fairfield County Heart Walk & 5K Run event, Sunday, October 25th at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. City Employees Take 23 Million Steps During Three-Week Steps Challenge
Almost 200 City of Stamford Employees are participating in a 10-week Health and Wellness Challenge with the goal of developing and sustaining a healthier lifestyle. The Wellness Challenge takes place over a ten week period with five different challenges designed to encourage healthy eating, fitness, and weight loss. One component of the Challenge was a step challenge in which employees were encouraged to take at least 5,000 steps a day. When the three week step challenge ended employees had taken a combined 23,209,788 steps.

Waveny Walkers raise $4,000 for Alzheimer's disease research

Wilton Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient Presents 50 Trauma Dolls to the Pediatric Department at Norwalk Hospital
Michelle Garvey of Wilton (pictured center) shares the results of her service project to earn a Girl Scout’s Gold Award with staff at Norwalk Hospital.  From left are: Maureen Vita, Carol Bauer, Kathleen Tighe,
Michelle Garvey, Jill Immermann, and Madeline Eicas.  Michelle graduated last spring from Wilton High School.  The project that she selected to positively impact the community was to make trauma dolls for the Pediatric Department at the hospital.  With the help of Christie's Quilting Boutique and the New Canaan Sewing Group and members of the community, she recently presented 50 dolls to the hospital.  The dolls will be used by staff as education tools and can also be given for recreation purposes to pediatric patients who can draw faces on them with special markers, also provided as part of this project.

State Mosquito Program Reports Increase in Mosquitoes Testing Positive for West Nile Virus
Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

The State Mosquito Management Program announced Friday that an increasing number of mosquitoes trapped and tested by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station are positive for West Nile virus (WNV). Residents are cautioned that August and September are generally the months when people are at the highest risk of acquiring WNV infections in Connecticut.

New Immune and DNA Targeted Therapies for Advanced Breast Cancer Studied at Norwalk Hospital
Norwalk Hospital, part of the Western Connecticut Health Network, has recently opened two important clinical research trials for women with advanced (stage IV) breast cancer. The first trial will test whether an anti-PDL1 antibody can improve the effects of chemotherapy for women with “triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)” The anti-PDL1 antibody targets a patient’s immune system so that it can recognize cancer cells and attack them.
