Yale-New Haven Hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center offer free head and neck cancer screening
Yale-New Haven Hospital, Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center will hold a free public screening for head and neck cancers. The free screenings will be held on Thursday, April 23 on the Saint Raphael campus from 4-6 pm at the McGivney Center for Cancer Care and on Friday, April 25, from 9 am- 4 pm in the East Pavilion special events area at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The annual screening, called “Check up from the neck up,” is a simple, five-minute exam that can save lives.

Local Physician Receives Honorary Degree From the American Academy of Family Physicians
Khuram R Ghumman, MD, MPH, CPE, FAAFP, a family physician in Enfield, CT, has achieved the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the national medical association representing nearly 110,600 family physicians, residents and medical students. The degree was conferred on more than 180 family physicians during a convocation on Saturday, September 28th, in conjunction with the AAFP's annual meeting in San Diego, California.

Health Department Reports Uranium Contamination in Stamford
The Stamford Department of Health has confirmed that there are several wells contaminated with uranium in Stamford. According to Anne Fountain, Director of Health & Social Services, of the 60 test results received by the Stamford Health Department Laboratory, 42 (70%) of the wells have tested positive for uranium and16 (23%) were at or above acceptable levels (EPA defined Maximum Contaminant Levels). In light of these results, the Department is encouraging residents to sign up and have their wells tested.

Access Health CT: Goal of 100,000 enrollees surpassed
Seven weeks ahead of schedule, Access Health CT (AHCT) on Monday announced that it has surpassed its self-imposed goal of enrolling 100,000 Connecticut residents and small businesses in qualify, affordable health care coverage. The total number of enrollees stood at 121,983 as of close of business yesterday. The total number of enrollees in private insurance plans is 50,665 or 41.5 percent of total enrollees.
