DPH announces new rabies testing guidelines
Starting July 1st, the state Department of Public Health’s (DPH) State Laboratory in Rocky Hill no longer provides state-funded testing of rabid wild animals suspected of infecting domestic pets but where there was no human exposure. DPH’s State Lab will continue to provide and pay for rabies testing of any wild or domestic animal suspected of carrying rabies if humans have been exposed.

City of Stamford Selects New Health Director
Stamford Mayor David Martin and Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare Ted Jankowski are pleased to announce that Jennifer A.M. Calder, D.V.M., M.P.H., Ph.D., CHSV has been selected by the Mayor, based on a recommendation by the Health Director Search Committee, to be the City’s new Director of Health. The rigorous interview process had input from the Mayor’s Office, Health Department, HR Department, Stamford Hospital and the Health Commission.

Raising Sails and Dollars to Support Local Cancer Patients and Their Families Through the 15th Sail Park City Regatta™
For 15 years, sailors from the greater Bridgeport area have participated in one of the oldest and largest independent fundraising regattas on Long Island Sound - the Sail Park City Regatta™. This major fundraising event will take place on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at the Fayerweather Yacht Club (FYC) in Bridgeport, CT. The Regatta will be hosted by FYC and Black Rock Yacht Club in Bridgeport. Proceeds will benefit St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound, Connecticut's premier cancer charity.

Norwalk Health Department's Mosquito Management Program helps control mosquitoes
The Norwalk Health Department recently launched its annual larvicide application program to reduce the mosquito population and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Workers from All Habitat Inc. applied larvicide to various standing water locations around the city. Larvicide prevents mosquito eggs from hatching. More

CTDPH: Two More Female Patients, One Pregnant, Test Positive for Zika
The state Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced that two female Connecticut residents, one of them pregnant, have tested positive for the Zika virus.  The non-pregnant patient returned from Puerto Rico in late April and became ill on April 29th with a rash, conjunctivitis and other symptoms associated with Zika. The other patient, nine weeks pregnant, returned from the Dominican Republic also in late April and became ill on April 28th with a rash. Both patients and their physicians have been informed of the test results.

Sexual transmission of Zika virus may be more frequent than previously reported

State health officials continue to provide information regarding Zika virus as more is learned about transmission and prevention of infections. Recent reports from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that sexual transmission from men to women may be more common than was known before the recent outbreak in the Americas.

DPH Asks Health Providers to Watch for Suspected Cases of Zika Virus
State health officials today said they have asked Connecticut health care providers to report suspected cases of Zika virus infection to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) and to the patient’s local health department. There are currently no reported cases of this mosquito-borne disease in Connecticut.
