Stamford: A small town remembers
st0831stdocumentary-691.jpg
If you missed this at the Avon Theatre, come to the Ferguson Library Thursday, August 13 at 7 p.m. for a special screening of the documentary, Stamford: A Small Town Remembers, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Michael Macari. To create the film, Macari teamed up with long-time friend and Stamford attorney, the late Joseph Richichi, to bring to light the history of their hometown—chronicling the rise of Connecticut’s premier city from its small town roots. With the on-camera testimonies of more than 40 citizens and celebrities, and 70 plus contributors of photos, film and materials, Macari and Richichi capture the essence of Stamford, as told through the eyes of its citizens from the 20th century.

It’s a Punk Reggae Party with The English Beat at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, July 29
English_Beat_III_-_Copy.jpg
Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. The English Beat endures because of musicianship. The band, led by the cool and charismatic Dave Wakeling has been fusing pop, ska, punk, reggae, rock and soul since 1978. Its upbeat songs deal with peace, love, harmony and, of course, as any good English band worth its salt does—politics. On Wednesday, July 29, at 8 p.m., Wakeling brings The Beat back to The Ridgefield Playhouse and will treat fans to ska-revival versions of "Tears of A Clown," "Can't Get Used to Losing You" and "I'll Take You There," as well as the band's original fan faves which include: "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Too Nice to Talk To," "Twist & Crawl," "Hands Off, She's Mine" and "I Confess." There’s something ageless about the songs that make you dance, their music percolated with infectious rhythms and irresistible grooves always has audiences on their feet! Start your night off at Tigers' Den (23 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield) for dinner before the show and enjoy a complimentary draft beer or house wine with your entrée by showing your ticket. Visit after and receive 15% off bill.

Master songwriter Steve Earle and The Dukes with their new blues album perform at The Ridgefield Playhouse on July 16
Steve_Earle_-_photocredit_Ted_Baron.jpg
Steve Earle has been described as having mastered and making the most of his voice – a voice weathered by hard touring over the decades. It should come as no surprise that nearly 30 years into his distinguished recording career, Steve Earle has made a blues record. With the new album Terraplane, the Americana songwriter supreme and his longtime band (Kelly Looney, Will Rigby, Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore) have delivered a compact, 37-minute bluesy growler that drags us through the dirt and enlightens us at the same time. “He sounds raw, ragged and real, backed by a band whose time on the road hasn’t worn away a looseness that seems to suit these new tunes,” Rolling Stone writer Andrew Leahey writes of Steve Earle and The Dukes sixteenth studio album, “Terraplane” (released February 2015).

LEON_RUSSELL_JUNE_3_2015_STRAW_HAT_photo_credit_Julian_Konwinski.jpg
Leon Russell has been called a rock and roll Renaissance man, and indeed there is little that this Oklahoma-bred singer-pianist hasn’t done. From leading the famous Joe Cocker's “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” tour, to performing with George Harrison and Friends at the Concert For Bangladesh, to his best-selling 2010 collaboration with Elton John, this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has given us 50 years of rich musical legacy. Leon’s songwriting credits include “Tight Rope”, “Delta Lady”, “Hummingbird”, “Lady Blue”, “Back To The Island”, “This Masquerade” and “A Song For You”, which is Russell’s best known song and one of the greatest love songs ever written. Russell has shared studios and stages with members of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and others. Leon Russell is returning to The Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, June 3, at 8 p.m. Special guest is Jamie McLean Band, who bring a raw energy to their music, which is described by ontapblog as “… rock laced with a blues undertone and with an unexpectedly strong country flavor.” Steak House Cellar Door (439 Main Street, Ridgefield) will pour a complimentary glass of wine with dinner the night of this event when tickets are presented.
