Charl van der Merwe announced as Executive Director of Tennis at Kings Highway Tennis Club and Shippan Racquet Club
Jeff Gocke, President of TennisCT, has announced the promotion of teaching pro, Charl van der Merwe, as the Executive Director of Tennis at Kings Highway Tennis Club in Darien, and Shippan Racquet Club in Stamford. Van der Merwe has over 10 years High Performance teaching experience with TennisCT. Originally working with Rick Ferman, (former coach of Todd Martin, a retired ATP player with a career high singles ranking of #4 in the world), Van der Merwe has successfully organized and directed many levels of youth tennis including a 14 & under advanced team who competed at the USTA National Championships in 2010.

Bridgeport Police Department’s Own, Kateema Riettie Wins Jamaican National Javelin Title
Bridgeport Police Officer Kateema Riettie, an instructor at the
Bridgeport Police Training Academy, recently won her seventh Jamaican National Championship in javelin. Officer Riettie, a native of Jamaica, won the national title on July 3, 2016, the final day of the Jamaican national Olympic trials in preparedness for the 2016 summer games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Her winning javelin throw sailed 49.89 meters, beating the national record holder, Olivia McKoy, who threw for 47.29 meters. Riettie, 42, threw her javelin just 12 meters short of qualifying for the Jamaican Olympic Team, which requires a score of 62.00m.

Malloy announces victory parade for Women's Huskies to be held this Sunday in Hartford
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut, City of Hartford, and the Hartford Business Improvement District will host a victory parade and rally celebration on Sunday, April 10 in downtown Hartford to congratulate the UConn Women’s Basketball team for winning the 2016 NCAA National Championship. The parade will kick off at 1:00 p.m. at the State Capitol building and will be followed by a victory rally outside of the XL Center at approximately 1:30 p.m.

14 Local Swimmers head to Regional Championships
Fourteen Wahoo swimmers headed out-of-state this month to compete in prestigious regional championship swim meets. Five of those swimmers headed to the 2016 Speedo Sectionals Long Course, March 31-April 3 in Buffalo, NY, seeking out Olympic Trial Cut times. Those swimmers (as pictured LtoR) are Hugo Sykes of Weston; Emma Holmquist of Wilton; Jake Kealy of Wilton; KyLee Perry of Norwalk who holds two Olympic Trials Cuts in the 50M Freestyle and 100M Freestyle; and Robby Giller of Wilton. The group was accompanied by Wahoos head coach Randy Erlenbach.

Plunge at the Park makes a big splash for Special Olympics
On a grey, overcast 50 degree Saturday morning, families, friends, and businesses of the greater Monroe area turned out for Monroe Police Department’s 6th annual penguin Plunge at the Park. Not even a light drizzle could keep more than 81 brave and loyal penguins from diving into the frigid water of Great Hollow Lake. Monroe's police, fire and EMS personnel and Special Olympics Connecticut co-sponsored this year's 6th annual event to raise over $12,000 (final count pending) in funds for the state's athletes with special needs. Those who raised money through sponsors, but did not brave the water, had the option of purchasing and wearing a unique yellow "I Chickened Out" T-shirt to show their support.
