Fresh off their new album Carnivale Electricos which evokes the party atmosphere of Carnival from New Orleans to Brazil, funk-jazz band Galactic will be in concert at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, August 10, at 8 p.m. One of the best funk bands out of New Orleans, the members of Galactic have been together so long that they are telepathic which makes their live performances electrifying. Galactic is part of a diverse community of musicians who do something that’s unusual in rock but not so wild of an idea in hip-hop, i.e. their shows have that “talent revue” quality where various vocalists and instrumental soloists each take a turn on stage in the Galactic sound universe. Singer/songwriter/actor Corey Glover of the band Living Colour will join Galactic’s all-star party-ready lineup on stage as a featured artist. Beginning at 7:15 p.m. in the Playhouse lobby, No. 109 Cheese & Wine will be hosting a wine & cheese tasting. Another bonus for the audience: Fifty Coins Restaurant (426 Main St., Ridgefield) is offering 10% off the dinner bill the night of the show when tickets/stubs are presented.

Galactic is, always was, and always will be a funk band. Whatever genre of music anyone in New Orleans is doing, from Mardi Gras Indians to rock bands to hardcore rappers, it’s all funk at the bottom, because funk is the common musical language, the lingua franca of New Orleans. Even zydeco can be funky as demonstrated in “Voyage Ton Flag”, the album’s evocation of Cajun Mardi Gras, in which Mamou Playboy Steve Riley meets up with a sampled Clifton Chenier inside the Galactic funk machine. Galactic has been making records for the past sixteen years, and their latest album Carnivale Electricos brings the dusk-to-dawn party-in-the-streets sounds of New Orleans home. A slew of stars who are part of this new release include Cyril and Ivan Neville, Mystikal, Mannie Fresh, Casa Samba, Maggie Koerner and Al Johnson among many others who convey the spirit of Mardi Gras.

A concertgoer who saw Galactic in Chicago raved: “Galactic put on a highly energetic show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago. Cyril Neville of the Meters and Neville Brothers fame accompanied them on percussion and vocals. Cyril has an amazing voice and really works the crowd up. The guys from Galactic also played to the crowd, especially their drummer, Stanton Moore, who frequently jumped up and down on his kit, working the room. Corey Henry of the Rebirth Brass Band accompanied Galactic on Trombone. Think "Jay-Z + trombone". Just an incredibly funky, high-energy show where the entire crowd danced the entire night!”
