Mashantucket, CT - Like they have for the past 20 years, The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods® Resort Casino will once again help to light up the night skies over the Thames River in celebration of Independence Day on Saturday, July 7. This year the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN) and Foxwoods Resort Casino will present the fireworks display in honor of “Outstanding Community Volunteers”.

To bring further recognition to these often unsung heroes, the MPTN and Foxwoods will host a contest to find the most deserving volunteer.

The winner will receive a VIP Package for four (4) that includes premium seating at Fort Trumbull in New London on July 7. Fort Trumbull is a revolutionary fort located at the state park with a superb vantage point for viewing the fireworks display. The winner will also receive a prize package courtesy of Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Individuals are urged to submit a 200-300 word essay through foxwoods.com/volunteer nominating a local citizen who is deserving of recognition for their volunteerism. All nominations must be received by noon on Monday, June 18, 2012.

All nomination essays will appear on foxwoods.com/volunteer beginning on Tuesday, June 19. The general public will then have the opportunity to cast their vote for the nominee who they feel should be honored for their service and dedication. The online voting will begin on Tuesday, June 19 and run through Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Midnight.

The “fan vote” will determine the group of finalists.

A group of esteemed panelists consisting of Alice Soscia of United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, Chrissa Caramia, of Bozzuto’s Inc. Hometown Foundation and Dreamride.org. Robert "Beau" Doherty, President of Special Olympics Connecticut, and celebrity panelist Avery Johnson, head coach of the Brooklyn Nets will review the finalist to determine the grand prize winner.

The name of the winner will be announced on Monday, July 2.

“The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods Resort Casino is proud to be a part of the New London Sailfest and OpSail 2012,” said Dale Wolbrink, Manager of Public Relations, “and to honor the countless volunteers in our community who give tirelessly of themselves.”

Employees of Foxwoods, MPTN, and Cumulus Radio will not be eligible.
