Norwalk, CT – We’ve made it through the Dog Days of Summer and in the cities and towns throughout our region, the first school bells of the year are ringing. Each year, Stepping Stones Museum for Children taps into the new-year-euphoria with its one-of-a-kind event. Join them on Thursday, September 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm for their annual Get Into It! FREE: Back-to-School Night Community Celebration as the museum stays open late with FREE admission, free school supplies and a program jam-packed with fun.

To help families celebrate the back-to-school year excitement, the museum has partnered with the local school system, city leaders, local businesses and farmers plus community partners from around the region to host this special salute to students of all ages, parents and educators.

In addition to the play-based learning and brain-building fun available in the museum exhibits and programs, families won’t want to miss out on the following special elements of the Back-to-School Night event:

The first 800 children to attend will receive a free backpack generously donated by Save the Children plus select school supplies
Stepping Stone's first-ever Community Feast featuring healthy sandwich samples provided by Subway World Headquarters as well as healthy food samples and demonstrations from local restaurants and farmers
A resource fair showcasing the outstanding community resources available to help students and their families navigate the school year
Puzzle experiences and story times

In addition to the grand celebration, Back-to-School Night will serve as the culmination of the work done this summer by students in the Norwalk Summer Academy (NSA). During the five-week NSA, students were engaged through Authentic Performance Tasks (APT) in learning about the importance of a healthy foodshed and the interconnected people, processes and systems that are required to make healthy food accessible for everybody in our communities. During Back-to-School Night, Norwalk Summer Academy (NSA) students will present their Official Healthy Foodshed Report to Norwalk city leaders and community friends while the museum showcases the “Healthy Foodshed Farm to Fork” Challenge board games and “Healthy Foodshed Pledge” public service announcements that the students created as part of their work.

A special thanks to goes out to Save the Children, Subway World Headquarters, Family Dentistry, The Maritime Aquarium, Millstone Farm, Monkey’s Pocket Apiary, Chef Jeff Trombetta of Norwalk Community College, Shaggy Coos Farm, Silverman’s Farm, Urban Farm #1, Wholesome Wave, AFC Urgent Care and the museum's very own Healthyville Cafe for their important donations or support of the Back-to-School Night Community Celebration.

Get Into It! FREE is an important component of Stepping Stones Museum for Children’s Open Arms initiative. In 2019, Open Arms will serve more than 60,000 children, caregivers and teachers throughout the region. Through this mission-critical accessibility initiative, Stepping Stones is able to offer monthly free admission evenings, free Family Membership program, year-round free admission for active-duty military families through the Blue Star Museums program, reduced-admission for Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cardholders through the Museums for All program, free admission days for families of children with special needs and a host of other important and engaging educational opportunities for children, families, Title 1 schools and community partners.
