Westport Arts Center’s final Jazz Jams of the 2011-12 season will be presented on two Thursdays, May 17 and 31, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the WAC Gallery, 51 Riverside Ave., Westport. Tickets are $15 for the public; $10 for WAC members and students; free for musicians who come to jam.

Some of the community’s most active musicians participate in the monthly Jazz Jam series, under the direction of WAC’s artistic director for jazz Brian Torff. The sessions are intended to be a spontaneous exploration of jazz, blues and other music styles, on which musicians are encouraged to drop in and jam. Among the instruments showing up at the jams are saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, electric violin, electric guitar, keyboard, drums, voice and more. WAC’s Jazz Jam series began in January 2011.

Torff noted, “This season's jazz jam session at the Westport Arts Center, sponsored by WAC board members Drs. Bonnie and Arthur Ashman, has been a great success. It has brought together professionals, semi-pros, and students in a warm atmosphere that has been encouraging to all. We appreciate the wonderful audience support and look forward to next season.”

Jazz Jam sponsor Dr. Arthur Ashman added, “It is our hope that this series has stimulated, and/or reawakened the love of jazz, our American music heritage.”

Jazz Jams for the 2012-13 season are scheduled on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. on September 20, October 18, December 13, January 10, February 21, March 14, April 18 and May 9.
