A full moon, a glass of wine, a bouquet of flowers, delicious food, lively music…all worked together to create a lovely and magical evening on Saturday, October 23 for attendees of Union Lodge No. 5’s inaugural scholarship fundraiser, “The Mason’s Secret Ball”. Held at The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s, the stellar restaurant and catering venue located at 2748 Post Road in Darien, the black tie gala event was open to brothers as well as the public and allowed the community to witness and participate in one of the most exciting new events to break into the Fairfield County social scene.

Worshipful Master Stephen Petri, Worshipful Brother Douglas Burchard, and Brother Sam Maurer planned and coordinated the event, with the assistance of WM Petri’s wife, Patrice, and several other brothers. Brother Thomas Burke managed the public relations for the event, include press releases, electronic media and poster creation. A silent auction was also conducted, featuring a variety of donated items ranging from professional photography services by Matt Abourezk, a visit to Noelle day spa, a surprise gift from Nagi Jewelers, a night at the Stamford Marriott Hotel, a visit to the Connecticut Cigar Company, two adult flex passes for 10 tickets at Curtain Call Theater in Stamford, and prized collectibles. Several door prizes were awarded, and each table’s flowers (donated by Peter’s Wholesale Florist, Stamford) were given to the lucky person with an envelope under their chair. The menu’s entrees of rib-eye steak, chicken marsala, or salmon were all cooked to perfection.

Music was provided by Roxy Perry, “New York Blues Queen”; Roxy was a 2009 Blues Hall of Fame inductee (http://roxyperry.com), and she and her band played a variety of songs, from slower dance numbers to songs that rocked the house. Worshipful Master Matthew Morris of St. John’s Lodge No. 6, Norwalk, a longtime fan of Roxy and her band, joined them to sing a rousing version of “Mustang Sally”, one of the highlights of the evening. WM Morris had everyone singing and dancing along, adding to the festive atmosphere. The evening concluded with the results of the silent auction, a round of hearty applause for the organizers, and several encore musical numbers by Roxy Perry to accompany the guests as they departed.

The fundraiser ball was conceived as a way to support Union Lodge No. 5’s new annual scholarship program. In 2010, Matthew J. Ordway, a graduating senior from Stamford High School, was awarded $1,000 to further his studies as an entering freshman at Duke University. The success of the ball allows Union Lodge No. 5 to continue, and even perhaps to expand, the scholarship program. The brothers of Union Lodge No. 5 are looking forward to next year’s event, which promises to be the capstone of the year!
