Area residents can join a Thanksgiving food drive now under way to help families in need enjoy a traditional holiday dinner.

The drive is a partnership between the United Church of Rowayton and the Department of Children & Families.

Nonperishable food such as instant potatoes, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, gravy and desserts is welcome.

Items should be double bagged and dropped off at the Meeting House behind the church at 210 Rowayton Ave., 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., until Nov. 14.

Bill Peltz, head of the church’s outreach program, said, “We provide gift certificates for the turkey. Nonperishable food is donated by church members and others in the community.

“Whether you give or receive, Thanksgiving is an important family tradition for everyone.”

The food is distributed by the Department of Children & Families.

“Each year, hundreds of families are helped,” said Wisenite Laurent with the department. “We are grateful to area churches that make this possible.”
