“Families have been a part of our market from the beginning,” says Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the Westport Farmers’ Market. “Kids are really excited to learn where their food comes from and meet the farmers. The farmers really love interacting with the kids.” Take a recent event, for example. Muddy Feet Flower Farm of Ashford, Connecticut, donated a centerpiece which young visitors painted. They learned about the importance of local flowers, pollination, and took home their own unique creation. As with the flower project, Get Growing aims to engage children who already come to the market and to bring new families and children into the Westport Farmers’ Market community. Each week the series is sponsored by a volunteer organization. Future sponsors of the Get Growing program will include farmers, musicians, artists, and chefs, and the market has planned additional art projects, activities, and a yearly Young Shoots photo contest. Why not make Get Growing a weekly event for your children? © Copyright by ShorelinePlus.com.
