Bridgewater, NJ - The Bridgeport Bluefish (12-7) suffered the teams’ first series loss of 2012 as the Somerset Patriots (11-8) defeated Bridgeport on Wednesday by a score of 5-2 at TD Bank Ballpark.

After neither team scored through the first nine-half innings, Somerset pushed three runners across in the bottom of the fifth. With runners at first and second, Freddy Sandoval lined a triple down the rightfield line to give the home team a two-run advantage. After a walk to Jesse Hoorelbeke, Aaron Matthews singled to left which brought the third runner home.

With runners at the corners, and nobody out in the sixth inning, an RBI single to center by Jonny Tucker brought home the fourth Somerset run.

Bridgeport got on the board courtesy of four consecutive base hits with one out in the seventh. Pedro Lopez contributed an RBI double down the left field line and Eddie Rogers lined a single to left to score the final Bluefish run.

The score was 4-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Greg Nettles sent a solo shot to left to close the scoring.

Bluefish starter, Raymar Diaz (0-2), suffered the loss as the righthander served four-and-a-third innings while allowing three runs on five hits and four walks. Joe Bateman replaced Diaz and completed two-and-a-third frames while surrendering two runs, four hits, and a walk. Somerset struck out twice against Bateman. Jesse English finished the contest by tossing an-inning-and-a-third of scoreless relief and striking one batter out.

Patriots Starter, Paul Phillips (3-0), earned the victory for the home team. He lasted six-and-a-third innings and surrendered two runs, five hits, and two walks while fanning seven. Three relievers combined for the final two-and-two-thirds frames of three-hit, one walk, and three-strikeout baseball. One of those relievers was Josh Rupe; he notched his third save of the year by throwing a scoreless ninth on one hit and a strikeout.

The Bluefish finish the three-game series against the Somerset Patriots on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Bluefish fans can listen to the contest live on bridgeportbluefish.com.
