Bridgeport loses, splits Somerset series

Bridgewater, NJ - In spite of a strong performance by Gilbert De La Vara, the Bridgeport Bluefish (27-36) lost the finale of the four game set against the Somerset Patriots (30-33) by a score of 2-0 at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday. Bridgeport is now 4-6 against Somerset this season.

De La Vara (3-5), performed well in defeat as the southpaw delivered seven-and-a-third innings and allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out four. Julio DePaula retired two hitters in the eighth and gave up an RBI single in the eighth to Jeff Nettles to give Somerset an insurance run.

Mike MacDonald (3-4) picked up the victory as Somerset’s starter completed seven frames of scoreless baseball on three hits and four walks while fanning three. Mike Solbach entered and struck out two in throwing a shutout inning in relief. Josh Rupe notched his twelfth save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Rupe struck out

In the third inning, with Jonny Tucker at the plate and a runner at first, the centerfielder drove in Dan Henningan with a double to leftcenter to account for the only other run for the Patriots on Sunday.

Kennard Jones had two hits and a stolen base for the Bluefish while Luis Lopez reached base twice on walks. Elliott Ayala and Luis Rodriguez were the only other Bridgeport batters with hits. James Simmons walked and stole a base to while Prentice Redman earned a walk to account for the only other baserunners for the road team.

Bridgeport returns to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a clash against the Sugar Land Skeeters on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Bridgeport will send lefthanded pitcher, Mike Tarsi (1-0, 1.48 ERA), to the hill against lefthanded hurler Bobby Livingston (7-2, 4.22 ERA). It is the final home series of the first half.
