Lancaster, PA - The Bridgeport Bluefish (5-4, 36-43) won the teams’ first contest at Clipper Magazine Stadium, this season, on Saturday. Bridgeport defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (5-3, 50-28) by a score of 3-1. Bridgeport is now 3-9 against Lancaster this season.

James Simmons and Luis Figueroa came up with RBI singles in the second inning to provide the Bluefish with the teams’ first advantage of the series. Simmons had two hits on the night with the final one coming on a solo shot to right in the fourth frame. It was his fourth homer of the road trip and his seventh of the season. Figueroa finished with the only other multiple hit night for the road team. Luis Rodriguez, Brock Peterson, and Eddie Rogers collected the other three hits for the winning side. Peterson extended his on-base stretch to fifteen consecutive games with a walk in the second.

Fehlandt Lentini drove in the only run of the night for the Barnstormers in the first inning. The outfielder served an RBI single to center. Adam Godwin, Lentini, and Francisco Hernandez collected two hits for the Barnstormers

A critical moment in the ballgame came in the seventh. With runners at the corners, and nobody out, Kyle Haines walked to load the bases for Lancaster. Jonah Bayliss induced a fielders’ choice grounder to third and a double play in successive at-bats to prevent any runs from scoring.

Bridgeport southpaw, Gilbert De La Vara (5-5), earned the victory as the starter served six innings of one run, eight hit, one walk, and five strikeout baseball. Bayliss, Jesse English, and Juan Rincon combined for three scoreless frames in relief. The tandem allowed one walk and one hit while fanning two hitters with Rincon picking up his first Bluefish save since last season.

Lancaster starter, Alan Johnson (8-5), took the loss as the righthanded hurler completed six innings and surrendered three runs on five hits and three walks. The starter struck out one Bluefish batter. Joe Bateman pitched against his former team for the first time and delivered an-inning-and-a-third of scoreless relief. Three Barnstormers relievers gave up two hits and struck out four batters in the final three frames.

Bridgeport closes a three game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM. Bridgeport will send righthanded pitcher, Matt Pike (1-3, 5.40 ERA), to the hill against Lancaster lefthanded starter John Halama (5-6, 2.87 ERA). Bluefish fans can listen to the contest on bridgeportbluefish.com. The voice of the Bridgeport Bluefish, Perry Miles, will have the call of the action. The pre-game show airs twenty minutes before each first pitch.

The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard to start a three-game series with the York Revolution on Monday, July 23.
