Dozens of people sought free acupuncture treatment at a clinic hosted by Connecticut Family Acupuncture on December 20th at the House of Bread in Hartford. Matt Maneggia and Jill Kleiber, licensed acupuncturists and owners of Connecticut Family Acupuncture, gave each person a 20-minute ear and scalp treatment as an introduction to the healing benefits of the all-natural procedure.

To further support the people that the nonprofit House of Bread soup kitchen and homeless shelter serves, the practice collected new winter clothing at both their West Hartford and Bolton locations during the month of December.

Matt Beard, Program Director for the House of Bread, expressed his gratitude for the two boxes of donated cold weather gear. “We serve over 250 people per day and are always in need of new hats, gloves and long underwear this time of year, particularly for men.” Donations of these items only can be dropped off at the soup kitchen located at 27 Chestnut Street in Hartford.

Prior to the clinic, Kleiber spoke to the crowd gathered in the day room to explain how acupuncture can relieve pain, stress, depression, and even treat drug addiction. For most of the participants, it was their first time trying acupuncture. Several men were looking for relief from arthritis pain. Leyda Cartagena of Hartford, the front desk receptionist at the House of Bread, was hoping to alleviate her chronic insomnia.

“Acupuncture is one of the safest forms of medicine out there and we are always happy to share it with others,” said Maneggia. “It was our privilege to provide this service and we hope it helped many of them discover a new way to treat their health issues.”

Since 1980, the nonprofit House of Bread has been offering daily meals, shelter, transitional living, affordable housing, education, a Thrift Shop, and job training programs to city families. Learn more at www.hobread.org.
