In celebration of Doctors’ Day, members of the community are encouraged to make a tax-deducible donation and send a personal note of thanks to their physician, in care of the Norwalk Hospital Foundation Office at 34 Maple Street, Norwalk, CT 06856. These personal tributes will be collected and presented to the physicians. The donations help fund new equipment, technology and training to provide patients the best possible care. “Day in, day out, physicians share their time, medical expertise and talents caring for patients and supporting Norwalk Hospital’s mission to provide uniquely excellent, innovative and compassionate health care. Doctors’ Day is a special opportunity for people to honor their physician while at the same time making a philanthropic gift in support of Norwalk Hospital,” shared Mary Franco, President, Norwalk Hospital Foundation. Last year, just over 200 people honored a total of 260 physicians, raising $28,000 for the hospital. History of Doctors’ Day The first observance of Doctors’ Day was held in 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance, in Winder, Georgia and included sending greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842. Through the years the red carnation has been used as the symbol of Doctors’ Day. © Copyright by ShorelinePlus.com.
