NEW HAVEN, CT - Saint Raphael’s Spine Center has been designated a Center of Excellence for Spine Surgery by the Joint Commission, an organization that accredits over 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Saint Raphael’s certification as a “Gold Seal” center from the Joint Commission makes it the only program in Connecticut to earn the designation in three types of surgery:

· Discectomy (removal of part of a disc pressing on the spinal cord or nerves)

· Decompression (removal of overgrown vertebral joints or ligaments that narrow the spinal canal)

· Fusion (surgical joining of vertebrae to create stability and alleviate back pain).

“This designation attests to the fact that our team has worked diligently to make the Saint Raphael’s Spine Center among the best in the state in terms of quality and patient satisfaction,” said Gary Bloomgarden, M.D., section chief of Spine Surgery. “This has been such a team effort – it’s a win for the hospital and a real win for our community.”

Saint Raphael’s is a regional leader in spine surgery, offering cutting-edge procedures including lateral interbody fusion, in which surgeons access the spine from the patient’s side. Saint Raphael’s also offers the latest technology in artificial disc replacement and the X-Stop implant for the treatment of spinal stenosis.
