New Haven, CT - Since 2008, roughly 17,000 homeowners have been faced with the prospect of foreclosure from their mortgage provider in the Greater New Haven region. Nearly 5,000 of our neighbors and friends lost their homes in the crisis. The effects of foreclosure are farther reaching than temporary instability and displacement, as research indicates that foreclosure leads to or intensifies financial difficulties, stress, poor health, and in children; behavioral or academic issues.

In response to the magnitude of the mortgage foreclosure crisis in this region, The ROOF Project (Real Options, Overcoming Foreclosure) began in 2008 out of collaboration between the City of New Haven and several community-based organizations, including The Greater New Haven Community Loan Fund (GNHCLF).

The Greater New Haven Community Loan Fund (a certified nonprofit community development financial institution) serves as the administrative home to The ROOF Project, which directs struggling homeowners and renters to the free and trustworthy resources that are available during the foreclosure crisis. The ROOF Project represents New Haven and the 14 surrounding towns and cities and has helped 84% of clients served come to a positive resolution.

To speak directly with a HUD and CHFA accredited housing counselor, call GNHCLF at (203) 624-7406 or NHS at (203) 777-6925. To find out about upcoming foreclosure prevention clinics or to be directed to legal resources, call The ROOF Project at (203) 789-8690.
